A Welcome and An Introduction! (and Mozart)

Welcome to the brand new student blog from Webster University’s Department of Music… we’re glad you’re here!  Here, you can read about life as a music student at Webster University, as well as find out about what’s happening in the department.

You may obtain more information about the Department of Music at Webster by going to our website.  There you will find information on our amazing faculty, as well as information on degree programs, classes, andupcoming concerts (I would encourage anyone who is looking into the department of music to come enjoy one of our concerts, if possible).

Now, allow me to introduce myself!  My name is Colton Lytle, and I am a Freshman at Webster University.  I am a percussionist and my major is “Music with an Emphasis in Instrumental Performance.”

I fell in love with percussion watching Lawrence Welk on PBS and asked for my first drum kit when I was two years old.  I first played in front of people when I was in first grade… now, not only do I play drum kit, but marimba, vibraphone, tympani, and anything else I can hit to get a sound out of!  I am one of the student bloggers on this site, and I look forward to sharing information, as well as an account of life inside the music department with you!

Finally, this blog post would not be complete without mentioning the new Mozart piece that has been discovered.  I just finished reading an AP article about this amazing find: a melody sketch, handwritten by Mozart himself!  It was discovered in a French Library.  As it turns out, they have had the brief score for many, many years, but never had it officially authenticated in any way because it lacked Mozart’s signature.  But sure enough, it really is Mozart.  As I understand it, the music lacks key signatures… as well as orchestration.  I’ve taken particular interest in this story, as I am currently learning the tympani part to Mozart’s 41st Symphony for the next Webster University Symphony Orchestra concert on October 19th.  (To read more about the new Mozart piece, click here)

I hope you find this blog to be enjoyable and informative, and that you have as much fun reading as I do writing!
